  Some high schools have implemented a program of team-taught coursesas part of the required curriculum. These courses focus on multi-disciplinetopics and are taught by two teachers from different disciplines. Supporters ofthis multidiscipline program believe that team-taught courses promote criticalthinking by encouraging students to view a topic from one more than oneperspective. Others, however, believe that requiring these courses isdetrimental for students, because a multi-discipline approach dilutes thesubject matter expertise that a single teacher brings to a class in his or herown filed. In your opinion ,should high school require each student to take atleast two multi-discipline classes as part of the graduation requirement?

　　•The main purpose of highschool education is to give a strong understanding in the basic of history,literature,math, and language. Because I value learning the specific knowledge that ispart of each of these courses,

　　I would not want to participate inmulti-disciplinary classes in high school. Therefore, I do not think suchclasses should be part of the required curriculum. They would only dilute thefoundational content knowledge that high school students should be learning. Inaddition, I am aware of the huge bureaucracy involved in administering my largepublic high school. Requiring all students to take at least twomulti-discipline classes before graduation would seriously increase teachers’workloads and  theadministrative red tape. I favor eliminating extra bureaucratic issues andletting each teacher concentrate on what know best. For this reason, I amopposed to having our school add a requirement for each student to take atleast two multi-discipline team-taught courses as a graduation requirement.

　　•My opinion is based on theidea that high school is not meant to provide a complete education but rathershould give us a solid foundation on which to further our learning, either incollege or through our own reading and activities. It is not that I would notvalue or enjoy a team-taught course that offers the perspective of two teachersfrom different subject areas. In fact, I think such courses could often beinteresting and enlightening. It is just that I do not think they belong inhigh schools. High school is the last opportunity many students have to get astrong grounding in all subject areas. High school administrators and teachersshould see to it that they give each student an excellent foundation in thebasics.

　　•Here is an example of whybasics are important. I remember hearing my sister: who is in college,talkingabout reading the novel COLD MOUNTAIN as part of an American Studies class. Shewas very excited about it; she said she loved how the courses connected historyand literature. However, she had already taken US. History and AP Americanliterature. By the time she took the American studies courses, she already knewsomething about how to understand a novel and how the civil war fit into thecontext of American history. Thus, in college ,she was at an appropriate levelto benefit from a multi-discipline course. I think that, say , a freshman inhigh school, who is still working on building a good understanding of history,would not benefit by combing a study of history and literature. Team-taughtmulti-taught multidiscipline courses could overwhelm students and dilute theconcentrated education that a course taught by an expert in one subject couldprovide. Letting teachers who are experts in their fields help students acquirebasic familiarity with the subject should, I believe , take precedence over amulti-disciplinary approach in high school.

　　•Right now , I value eachteacher’s knowledge and passion intheir own subject areas. I may not be in any courses that ask me to consciouslyrelate what I am learning in one subject with what I am learning in the others,but I try to do some of this on my own when it is possible. Because I amgetting a good grounding in each individual subject now. I will be better ableto handle multi-disciplinary approaches in college and later in my career.While a multi-disciplinary approach is ultimately essential in college ,work,and even life, the best preparation for it comes from focused classes inindividual subject areas, taught by teachers who are excited about their ownfields and are so bogged down in educational bureaucracy that they do not havetime to stay up to date with new developments in their fields. At the highschool level, students will get the best education from knowledgeable , informed teachers who focus on the content and skills that are unique to a single discipline.
